You know, its fucking depressing at times. Confused

I eat at food courts, hawker centres, practically all those clearing plates/cleaning up are elderly folk, some of whom are frail and hunched.

I go public toilets, same thing. Elderly folks.

I go fast food restaurants, same thing. Mostly elderly folks.

I walk around, elderly folks selling tissue, begging, rummaging rubbish bins for empty drink cans.

I don't know what to think, really.

to the elite, they do not exist because since when did the elite ever go to food court, hawker centres, public toilets, fast food restaurants and walk around the heartlands?

It might be their own choice to work, you know. I think sometimes it's better for these elderly people to work than just doing nothing at home. Keep them active and they will live longer.

if LKY and the rest of the asswipes think the country should be beholden to them forever (see the BS said by the ministers) then they have a moral duty to look after the elderly who slogged through our nation-building times..

oh.. i forgot.. there is no such thing as moral duty from them.. only a moral duty to them...

Well, perhaps , for some of them. But many of those cleaners/helpers have obviously difficulty even walking fast and their faces sure don't look happy. More like tired/resigned.

I mean, seriously. Would you like to spend your later years cleaning up after people?

The begging and rummaging trash I'm sure is not by choice.

What happen to their children, if they have any? Even if they don't want the parents to stay with them, I don't think it's that expensive to feed them, is it?

There is no free lunch and they do not want people to develop a crutch mentality.................while they themselves bitch and moan about not being paid as much as the top earners in the private sector.

LKY himself has basically admitted that none of them feel a sense of duty to serve the country, saying that it is an 'admirable sentiment' and nothing else.

Well I can only speak for the cleaning aunties at my workplace.

Most of them never married and have no children.

Those with children, either enstranged or their children have problems feeding their own families.

One is working because she cannot afford to pay for her high blood pressure medication otherwise.

friend complaining to me about my boss being an obsessive micromanager..

boss is chairman of organising some seminar... friend is one of the committee members... she said that the boss is going through EVERYTHING.. including how many power sockets they need, where the VIP will stand, how many people they should cater for lunch...

uhh.. that's what the committee members are for.. to work out the details..

they're getting sick of her telling them what to do when it's done in another way which will get them the same result.. and imposing herself in technical matters which she knows nothing about (remember the power supply rant she made? )

i told my friend.. you don't have to see her after this stupid seminar.. think about me.. she's my boss!

That really does sound depressing. What happen to their cpf? Any aid from the government at all?

At least the elderly people here get some kind of pension from the Government. Mind you, now the Government also tries to encourage people not to retire to early because of the aging population and there are not enough young people to replace them.

and even those who do and have good relations with them, their children may not be doing that well either with their own children and the high costs of living in sg

got a few cleaners at my office who are working because their families really need the money... they're okay and cheerful but if you're 66, won't you prefer to be with your grandchildren or at leisure?

there are a few at the hawker centre who collect cans.. i've seen one with a spastic adult in tow before... probably her child..

makes me think back to a time where my organisation's then-no.1 was waxing lyrical about "helicopter vision" and how people "must have that" and blah blah in one of his usual "meetings" where we swear he's holding because he's lonely and wants people to "listen to him"

he asked for comments... and there i was, barely 2 years in service, tore his "helicopter vision" delusion apart... saying that those who have this type of vision, see people as little dots moving around.. and from their helicopter, they are detached and do not see what makes up the little dots... if the little dots suffer, what the little dots are.. and after a while, from their helicopter, the little dots stop being human beings and are nothing but statistics...

then i said that we have to get our heads out of the clouds, get back to earth and see, know and experience what is actually going on... instead of treating people like some kind of "Sim City" type game..

he wasn't happy...

i've advocated this: make the mini-stars live 2 months out of each year of their lives like Joe Average and Jane Ordinary... because goodness knows they've lost touch with reality and are insulating themselves even more with their insane payrise.. and who knows? they may be running away from reality...

I went to MIL's home for dinner last night and while inside the lift, I overheard an old woman telling a neighbour (in an unhappy tone) that someone's son sold off his parent's flat and put the parent in an old folks' home. Sad
